The Hub

The Hub

The Hub is a drop-in activity that is available to high schools during lunchtime. The Hub usually runs for an hour and is an informal group for high school pupils to spend time with NSYFC workers: building relationships, having fun and discussing the life issues they face as teenagers in Stoke-on-Trent.

Up to three NSYFC workers run the group as a drop-in and usually work with around 30 pupils (some come every week, others drop in only occasionally). There is no formal structure for the time: games, music, videos and craft activities are made available to the young people and workers usually organise some ‘big group activities’ that several pupils will get involved in. None of this is enforced as the emphasis of The Hub is to be an informal place for teenagers to relax and express themselves freely.

We usually find that relationships of trust build with those pupils who come regularly to The Hub and through this informal setting we are able to explore issues such as faith, relationships and future with the young people through informal conversations raised by their questions to us.

The Hub is not specifically for Christian students, but is open for any pupil of any age who is asking questins about the things that matter most to them, discussing relevant themes & topics for young people in the 21st century.

NEW for 2006: We are currently developing a splinter project, The Hub Extra, for some ‘Hubbers’ who would like to go further in discussing issues of faith and life. The Hub Extra will run as a lunchtime club on another weekday (additional to The Hub) and will have more of a structured format, using teaching, discussion, multimedia and group and individual activities to explore the basics of the Christian faith and it’s relevance for young people today. We hope to pilot this in one of our current Hub high schools during the spring term of 2006.
